Sharon Stone has reportedly been sacked by French fashion brand Dior over her undiplomatic remarks on China’s devastating earthquake.
Dior is concerned its products might face a Chinese boycott after Stone told reporters in Cannes that the quake, which killed at least 50,000, may be “karma”.
Christian Dior is officially distancing itself from the controversial comments Sharon Stone, who models for the brand, made about the Chinese earthquake at the Cannes Film festival last week.
In a red carpet interview for a Hong Kong news channel, the actress told reporters: “I’m not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, ‘Is that karma? When you’re not nice that the bad things happen to you?’”
Sharon Stone’s karma comments
The French fashion house has issued an apology for Stone’s comments and pulled her from its Chinese ad campaign for anti-ageing products. And the state-run news agency Xinhua often seen as a mouthpiece of the Chinese government, described Stone as “the public enemy of all mankind”.
According to the later report, Dior recognised that her remarks were “hurtful”.
“We also said we shared the pain of the Chinese people and earthquake victims in Sichuan,” a spokesman for the Dior said.
Following a media outcry Dior has decided to pull posters featuring Stone - who has been the face of its Totale Skincare line since 2005 - from all its outlets in China, fearing an association with her will affect sales.
Its Paris office has also released an official statement regarding the sensitive situation.
“We absolutely disagree with her hasty comments and we are also deeply sorry about them,” it reads. “We will never support any opinion that hurts the feelings of the Chinese people.”
Stone has since apologised for her comments.
