Louis Vuitton at COMME des GARCONS Collection

July 17, 2008 by admin

Louis Vuitton opens an impermanent store inside Comme des Garcons in Tokyo. The idea for the project emerged from the memories of Comme des Garcons founder Rei Kawakubo. The collaboration initiated with CdG approaching Yves Carcelle, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton while he was sitting front row of the CdG show on Friday, its a way “to celebrate 30 years since Vuitton first opened in Tokyo”.

In 1978, as a young designer, she saw the first Louis Vuitton store to open in Japan and was fascinated by the image of French craftsmanship and art de vivre it projected – a luxury that seemed to her, at the time, unattainable.  Three decades on, Rei Kawakubo wanted to revisit her impressions, and so the association between Comme des Garcons and Louis Vuitton was born.

Rei Kawakubo of COMME des GARCONS is definitely keeping herself busy, besides the H&M collaboration slated to drop in November, according to The Moment she will be joining forces with Louis Vuitton to open a joint Tokyo store in September. The store will be only open for three months and with all collaborations there’s always a limited edition collection, there will be “six one-off bags designed by Kawakubo in LV monogram pattern” it will be available to be ordered by shoppers.

The CdG store on Kottodori, Omotesando will get a face-lift for the Vuitton project with LV investing in the store and profits will be split.

Kawakubo described her designs as ‘party’ bags, promising multi-handles or two handles morphing into one. All will use the Monogram toile, with the LV initials, and the offerings will hark back to the styles of 30 years when Vuitton made only bags and leather goods.
