Students showcase their designs for Topman Capsule Collection at Kingston College Fashion Show

June 20, 2012 by

Last week Kingston College celebrated the work and success of graduating Fashion students with exciting and inspirational collections reflecting the students’ incredible talent.

Extended Diploma Fashion and Clothing first year students showed a group collection of work inspired by the theme ‘Structure and Aesthetics’ in which students demonstrated their ability to develop a fashion-specific concept inspired by architecture. The end result was a conceptual, yet wearable collection of dresses for Autumn/Winter 2012/13.

Second year students on the same course presented their individual collections, grouped into an eclectic mix of styles that reflected the wide and rich variety of sources of inspiration. The students were proud to present their final garments for 2012: the realisation of many weeks of design, textile experimentation, pattern cutting and garment construction, all inspired by each students’ own unique choice of theme.

Foundation Degree (FdA) in Fashion and Textiles students’ first year collection depicted the theme ‘Beauty in Decay’ which the students responded to through extensive textile experimentation to create a strong look for the catwalk.

Finally the second year Foundation Degree students showcased their group capsule collection designed for Topman. The students were briefed by Topman Buyer, Hannah Herranz, for this ‘Collaborative Live Assignment’, intended to simulate the current working practices that take place in a design studio. The resulting Autumn / Winter collection incorporated warm colours and a rich textile story.

Tahmina Ali, first year Extended Diploma in Fashion and Clothing, commented: “The Fashion Show was an absolutely amazing experience as it shows us what working in the industry is like. The models were fabulous and all the backstage crew did an excellent job. I’m sure next year will be bigger and better and it’s all thanks to all the teachers as without them this wouldn’t be taking place at all… Thanks guys!”

Second year student, Gemma Chandler, who will be studying for a  BA (Hons) Fashion Atelier at UCA Rochester in September, added: “This year’s show was a real success. I couldn’t have hoped for anything better as a final year college student. Everyone’s garments look incredible throughout all the year groups and they all had such diversity within the same collections. It was a brilliant send off for us as second years, showing us what we have all achieved in this short space of time and making us proud of how far we have come.”

Maia Diver, Head of Section – Fashion commented: “Our students this year have been outstanding, not only in the standard of their work; the high quality of construction, rich textiles and embellishment, but also for their enthusiasm, professionalism and contribution to the production of the show itself. The College is exceptionally proud of their achievements.”

Kingston College is holding its last Open Day, for September 2012 entry, on Friday 29 June, 11am to 2pm. Register your attendance at www.kingston-college.ac.uk or call 020 8546 2151.
